"Being told that we are “lucky” to live in a democracy and have the right to protest is easily the most patronising thing a politician can say."

Presumably the "logic" underlying this argument is that since the privilege of free speech has been conferred upon us, the least we can do to show our gratitude is to refrain from using it. It's nice to see that expensive education wasn't wasted.

Didn't Lenny Bruce also say summat similar, about how the only people fit to be in the White House are the ones you'd have to drag screaming up the driveway and hurriedly throw them in and lock the door to stop them escaping?

Here's another quote that applies:
"To suceed in the world it is not enough to be stupid, you must also be well mannered" - Voltaire
Perhaps an addendum should be added that as long as you have power you don't have to care.

Reading your remarks about morons in power, I was reminded by an aphorism spoken millennia ago by either Socrates or Seneca (some wise bloke starting with 'S', anyway) about how the kind of people who seek political power are precisely the kind of people who should least be entrusted with it. Which is similar to Groucho's comment about "any club who would have someone like me as a member..."

Laughed out loud at the nail-on-the-headness of how lucky she is to have the right to leave power by a non-guillotinous route, but not half as much as I've laughed at the ideas I get thinking about Prince being in charge of foreign policy.
