I love the incompetent ones. My blog is nowhere near visited enough for this, thankfully, but I get some classic email spam. More recently this has included a peculiar name for the sender, which read something like "&fillinname&@aol.com"...

As for that Nixon thing...that's just freaky. And an extremely annoying manipulation of your emotions and a waste of your time.

Merrick, I don't see it as particularly labour-intensive. Think about it... contact a marketing agency; ask them to hire 20 people for a month long campaign; the contract stipulates that each of the 20 starts a blog which they must keep updated once every two days and a quota of 5 comments on other blogs every two days. Do you think you could find 20 people willing to do that for a month in exchange for - say - a thousand quid? That's 20 grand in total... a drop in the ocean of the marketing budget for a major film.

I dunno how effective it is, whether it's worth 20 grand of publicity... but that kind of viral marketing is very big these days, so I assume someone's worked out that there is a payback.

Sheesh, apart from the ethics, how labour-intensive the Assassination thing must've been!

Whilst that's foul, there's worse: how about an email scam asking NGOs - starting with African ones - to part with registration fees for conferences that don't exist.

That has got to be one of the most bizarre stories I've ever heard! I don't get the logic behind it - a renegade publicity agent?
