As environmentalists, we try to preserve the constituent parts of the natural world not so much for their own sake, but in the hope that at some future time the earth may discover the elusive resonances between these parts. Trying to preserve the world by defending its parts in a piecemeal fashion is rather like a physician attempting to protect the health of an individual by preserving the liver, the heart, and the brain, while allowing other vital organs to degenerate.
