Something for the weekend
From 1986. But frankly, political music doesn’t get much better than this (though the YouTube video’s sound is about a half-second out of sync with the images which is annoying).

Handsome. Whatever happened to Matt Johnson? The man saw the future.

Justin, the last album of new material was NakedSelf in 2000. It’s well worth tracking down if you’ve not heard it, though it probably doesn’t reach the heights of Dusk if I’m being completely honest. Since then there’s been a few bits and pieces; a couple of compilations of rare tracks and remixes (though as a hardcore fan, I bought pretty much every single at the time so there wasn’t much on them to really tempt me). There was a new single — Mrs. Mac — last year but nothing since then. Still keeping my fingers crossed for new material though.
You’d probably prefer the version on the soundtrack of The Transporter 3, m’hoop. Though I guess you might be worried about seeing the movie in case it fails to live up to the sheer brilliance of the first two. In the end you won’t be able to resist it though, will you?

I love Matt Johnson and I played this album to death when it was released but ‘As the pound in your pocket turns into a dollar’ was hardly the most prophetic of lines.
Shame as well, cos it would have allowed me to visit my folks back home.
PS – His angst bedsit classic ‘This Is The Day’ is played to death on American TV as part of an M & M advertising campaign. Think of the royalties? Maybe that’s what he meant about turning pounds into dollars? 😉

Say it ain’t so! Please! Or at the very least, tell me that he doesn’t own the publishing rights to his early stuff and it’s being used without his permission.
When Eno turned corporate spokesman, I thought it couldn’t get any worse. But Matt Johnson? Shilling crap for corporate America?! FUCK! That’s so demoralising when even he’s been bought and packaged. This Is The Day reduced to a sales jingle for the Mars Corp.?
We live in profane times. And when those who once railed loudest against that profanity are willing to stick their noses in the trough? Aw crap, I’m depressed as hell now.
I think I’ll stick on a Julian Cope album. At least there’s one righteous mofo left in my record collection.
